The R.A.F and R.A.F Regiment used various armoured cars and vehicles, some were hastily"home made" on the R.A.F stations based on car and lorry chassis. With concrete and plate Armour welded on for station defense duties in the early stages of the war after Dunkirk when the threat of invasion was high and expected.
Early vehicles such as the "Armadillo", "Beaverette" and "Beavereel" are rare because of their thin sheet steel Armour.
By 1942 the R.a.f Regiment armoured flights were equipped with factory made vehicles such as the " Morris l.r.c Mk1 & 2" ," Humber Mk1 & 2", "Marmon Herrington Mk 1& 2" and the Canadian GMC "Otter" armoured cars.

A Wartime OTTER armoured car, made by GMC in Canada, armed with a Bren gun turret and a Boys anti-tank rifle. Sometimes mounting a .50 calibre machine gun as well.
This was an ideal vehicle for patrolling, Airfield defense and liasing.
